In the last few years, the term Speed camera detector has become more common and even more with the time to come. The reason being the growing number of law control radars on our streets. A speed camera detector can save your money from the hefty fines however the question unanswered is is how actually it works and does it work at all.
There are many ways equipped by police and other law enforcement groups to measure the speed of the vehicle. They utilize mobile or stationary devices that function using infrared light or microwaves to the areas in front or some times even behind them. Another type of equipment used for speed camera detectors comprises of multiple cameras at different locations. These are operated centrally at one place and measures the speed based on a license plate recognition system between points A and B.
There are many types of speed camera detectors that might some time not protect you from the multiple camera system. Then how do these laser guns and radars work? Say for example when measuring the speed, the police officer can choose from any of the above mentioned devices. Laser guns are not used in moving vehicles but usually on stationary or hand held vehicles. The gun emits a column of pulsed infrared light that progresses towards the vehicle. Once the ray hits your vehicle, a portion of it is reflected back to the sender vehicle. When this signal is send more than twice, the difference in the reading is calculated by the internal microprocessor to determine the your speed.
Regular radars use alike principles sending out pulsed microwave frequencies rather than infrared light beam. The change in frequency, named Doppler effect is later measured, based on which the speed of the vehicle is measured.
Each of the devices must air out some frequency either in the form of infrared light or microwave frequencies. Depending upon the model, the sensitivity of the infrared frequency of speed camera detector differs. On receiving the frequency, the speed camera detector responds in the way of setting the alarm off which in turn warns the driver about the possible treat.
The primary frequency used in US are Ka, K, X and IR brands in which the first three are frequency of microwave used by regular radars and the later one, the infrared light frequency being used by laser guns. Ku bandwidth is used only in Europe.
It is definite the speed camera detectors work fine. However not all units available in market give you the same quality protection.
