There are many types of speed cameras that are used to monitor and control the speed of the vehicles on the road in UK. As a matter of policy, the Government has approved the use of speed camera devices which are based on GPS technology. It is also specified that such cameras should be visible to public. Even though there is no reliable statistics available to assess the exact number of speed cameras in UK, it is estimated that more than 6000 fixed cameras are installed in the country apart from mobile and handheld devices.
About a dozen or more types of speed cameras which are widely used belong to the approved technologies and more or less based on identical principles. Gatso, Truvelo, Specs, Peek, Speed curb, Watchman, Traffic light, DS2 and Mobile are some of the most popular brands that are installed on the roads. There are few others like TSS and Traffic master which are also used by the Police or Traffic regulatory authorities.
Gatso use Radar to measure speed of a vehicle passing through and to photograph the rear side so that the number plate can be seen clearly. Truvelo use loops on the road. Both Gatso and Truvelo are mounted on poles which are erected on the road sides. The poles or pillars will be generally very tall to keep them safe from miscreants who may meddle with them. Specks are mounted on gantries across the roads. Peek also use loop which will trigger when a vehicle exceeds the stipulated speed. Speed curb and Watchman are also installed similarly. They photograph the vehicles from behind while monitoring speeds. DS2 and Mobile are also mounted on poles and work like Gatso. DS2 use rubber strips on the road so that the vehicles will tread over them. The system needs a mobile camera.
Another type of camera is TSS Auto vision 3 which is widely used. This type is posted on road sides, but not as visible as other types. Apart from such stationery devices, mobile and hand held speed cameras are also used in the process. The evolving technology is developing more sophisticated devices in this respect. In the context of increasing number of road accidents, monitoring and regulating traffic has become imperative for the authorities. Penal provisions incorporated in the statute are intended to deter driving public from over speeding and causing avoidable hazards. Speed cameras play an important role in identifying and hauling up the violators of rules.
