The wait for the new guest on my review table made me slightly exhausted. But the moment I received it in my hands, I know, my eyes sparkled. It was a small, pocket-sized, black colour satellite navigation device-Navigon 1400 Car cum Pedestrian Sat Nav. As I ran my fingers over it’s body, I could feel its fineness. The black, matt finish body, with a dimension of 96.5mm X 72mm X 14.5mm, gave Navigon 1400 a class look. The GPS unit, which was almost weightless at 128 grams, was comfortable to hold.
However, The design is not what really matters. I decided to go for a drive with Navigon 1400 Pocket-Size Sat Nav. It started my journey almost instantaneously. Perhaps, it is the SiRF Atlas IV GPS receiver that enabled it for a fast operation. The operating system loaded into it is Microsoft Windows CE and the processor is Centrality Atlas IV that flee at 500MHz. Its 3.5 inches touch screen display, guided me with vivid and vibrant view of maps.
When I was entering the address, with Navigon 1400’s traditional, on-screen keyboard, it started showing me the possible combinations. This allowed me to enter the address, without any errors. There was an alternative option to enter the postal code as well. As soon as I entered the destination, it displayed the routes and there was an option to view the map either in 2D or 3D perspective. I chose 3D view.
As I moved ahead, it showed me the road signs very clearly, especially the speed signs. Each time when I exceed my speed limit, there was the speed assistance of Navigon 1400 to warn me, by both audio as well as visual warnings. Similarly, there is warnings for speed cameras as well. It comes pre-installed with a database of 18,000 permanently installed cameras across Europe.
Of more interest, there is a NavigonMy Route feature available in this GPS navigation system. It can recommend routes that suit your driving style, time or day of the week. The lane assistance of the device was remarkable, as it made my cross through the hectic traffic a cake walk. When I neared my destination, I wanted to park the car. The clever parking feature of Navigon 1400 showed me the parking option, with information on the opening and the closing hours of the parking slot. I saved the location of my car after parking, using Navigon 1400’s Last Mile feature.
When I started to walk, Navigon 1400’s pedestrian navigation feature was there to guide me. To my surprise, it showed me some of the hidden tourists attractions on the way. I was able to save few of my favourite destinations as well. There is a good database of points-of-interest in Navigon 1400. This not only shows you the way to the nearby place of interest, but also provides the additional details such as telephone numbers, opening hours and addresses.
I walked back to my car after a small visit to my favourite Italian restaurant. Since the location of my car was saved in my sat nav, it traced me back to the car easily. I started my journey back, to write about the cute Navigon car GPS in my hand. Alas! The fuel got over. No worries. There was Emergency help menu in Navigon 1400 to aid me. It had details of the near by petrol stations, police stations, hospitals and pharmacy. After filling the tank, I continued my journey. I found a small change in the traffic, a new round about. When I referred Navigon 1400, I found an option to enter this changed information about the road traffic, in Navigon MyReport.
When I ended my journey, I felt the drive was so relaxing. The device comes with 1GB of flash memory and has an 800mAh lithium battery. For transfer of data, there is a USB port. Even though, Navigon 1400 lacks some premium features like bluetooth, real-time traffic alerts and so on, it is a considerable choice for one who look for a simple sat nav, with car as well as pedestrian mode navigations.
