Raytheon Missile Systems launches GPS-enabled Torpedo Kit
February 5, 2010
Raytheon Missile Systems, headquartered at Arzona has developed a new Wing kit that provides satellite navigation guidance to the torpedoes dropped from aircraft. Dubbed as Raytheon Fish Hawk Wing Kit, it is crafted to attach on Raytheon’s MK-54 Torpedo.
With the help of the information from the control room and the GPS navigation system, Raytheon Fish Hawk Wing Kit can guide the torpedo to the target area. When the system reaches at a particular location in the lower altitude, the Wing kit unchains the torpedo. Along with the torpedo, it releases a parachute as well. This parachute will lessen the speed of the torpedo while entering the water. Once it launches the water, the sonar guide and the inertial navigation system will take the torpedo to the determined target.
Raytheon Fish Hawk Wing Kit, which is developed for US Navy is ready to exhibit this week at the Singapore Airshow. Reportedly, US Navy expects to sign a contract for the manufacture of torpedo kits to match P-8 Poseidon this year.

According to Hennie KoerKamp, the Chief Executive Officer of Nav4All, its data licensing partner Navteq, a 100 percent Nokia subsidiary has refused to extend their mutual agreement in an unexpected manner. This has forced the Dutch Navigation company to suspend its operations, especially the sale of free sat nav application. He reveals this in a sobbing e-mail to its customers sent on January 28th.
The sudden action has led the 27.6 million Nav4All customers worried. Nav4All was a free sat nav app that can run on all smartphones. It used Navteq’s data for the purpose.
Reportedly, this move is the consequence of Nokia’s latest decision to sell free satellite navigation on its mobile phones last month. Nokia bought Navteq for $8.1 billion in 2008. Even though Navteq has stopped its partnership with Nav4All, it has been said that Navteq will continue its operations as an independent unit. Besides, the customers are said to have access to all Navteq data under certain terms and conditions.
Navteq added that it is the failure to reach in an amicable terms and conditions that has led to the closure of the agreement with Nav4All. In fact, Nav4All has become the latest victim of free sat nav offering by Nokia and Google.
