Satellite navigation technology has already proved it to be a priceless tool for drivers. But What if for pedestrians who like to explore the city via walk? Here is new sat nav from Garmin, Nuvifone aimed not at motorist but at pedestrians. They help people find their way on foot around the snarl of city streets and determine point of interest(POI).
The better part is that you don’t have to carry this bulky device all through your journey, since this new navigational software comes equipped with your mobile phones. The Nuvifone, the first sat nav phone integrates the usual mobile phone function with the ability to direct users unpainful.
The gps sat nav receiver functions just like in car sat nav system locating you the exact place few yards before and comes built in with European mappings. Switch to pedestrian mode that instructs the sat nav to ignore one way system and lets it to direct the user to the vehicle restricted streets.
All you have to do is just text in the address for the device will calculate the shortest route and guides us to the spot. The database of POI states where you are exactly right now and then gives street by street, real time directions as you walk.
Using the in built speaker of sat nav phone or blue tooth headset the directions are communicated using voice commands along with directional arrows on 2D or 3D maps in the screen. Attempts of other pedestrian sat nav like Nokia N92 and MDA Vario III smart phone has been proved far from flawless.
One of the biggest disadvantage on foot sat nav system is that they lack to locate the satellites overhead due to the tall buildings raised on both the sides of the street. Another cause for the flaw is, the sat navs calculates its way mainly based on the straight line movement. Since this is not possible with the pedestrians, the sat nav device struggles to keep track.
Today most of the big manufacturers are working towards developing personal navigational device that rules out all these problems.
