sensor fitted buses in glasgow Bus Drivers Movements To Be Monitored It has been reported that over 9000 buses in Scotland and England are to be fitted with sensors that are capable of accessing the smoothness with which a vehicle is driven. This equipment detects the driver’s speed, cornering and braking patterns and displays it to the drivers. This system is aimed at making passenger’s rides smooth whilst helping them save fuel. Drivers are provided with the facility of viewing their results on a website as well as compare it to the average. With a score allocated to each of the journey, the drivers are able to optimise their driving patterns. There is also a plan to present weekly financial rewards to the best and improved drivers.

This equipment is said to use GPS technology to monitor their driving styles. A similar study performed in London, Glasgow and Bradford in March 2009 has reported to have seen a 70% decrease in unnecessary manoeuvres. Also it is said to use 500 litres of less fuel reducing almost 1.2 tonnes of CO2. This system has been designed to help everyone protect the environment.

It is expected to be rolled out to the entire group by 2010.
