FCC has just recently cleared the latest Garmin PND, Nuvi 1690 and its integrated GSM radio for use in the United States. The Nuvi 1690 is said to include Bluetooth, GSM, GPRS, EDGE connectivities along with real-time traffic downloads.
As per reports, a few standardised features have also been integrated into the Nuvi 1690 that include POI updates, weather information, two way route transfer from desktop computer or any compatible online interface and Google Local Searches. One major drawback is reportedly its inability to support voice calls, however the unit’s integrated Bluetooth and any compatible mobile phone helps fill the gap.
Most likely there might be a monthly charge for the GPRS/EDGE connectivities. Garmin is yet to state on when the device is set to be launched and how they intend to charge for the data connection. Also the pricing details of this unit is yet to be released.
