PixelActive which is a 16 person company rendering 3D urban modeling software for satnav navigation, video games, urban planning, and simulation has been acquired for an unrevealed amount by Navteq. The traffic, location data and map provider, getting serious about their 3D mapping technology said that the primary purpose of purchasing the firm is to help the company proceed from 2D to 3D maps.
Navteq is already familiar with the technology of PixelActive as it is utilizing Cityscape product of the company. Founders of PixelActive, Micheal Kelley and Steve Rotenberg said that they will continue to work for the company in their present roles and spread out its ability to develop products in 3D environment. PixelActive’s former clients include big names like Nintendo and Lockheed Martin
Executive vice president of Navteq maps said that future developments in navigation and other location enabled solution will depend considerably on 3D mapping capabilities.
