Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) has successfully repositioned the first Galileo test satellite, GIOVE-A, to 113km above the initial orbit. This is done to make way for the 27 operational satellites of Europe’s satellite constellation.
Since its launch in December 2005, GIOVE-A has accomplished all its mission and remains in excellent condition. It facilitated the reception of navigational signals from medium earth orbit using two different radiation-monitoring instruments. These signals are used to characterise the MEO environment. It is reported that GIOVE-A is fully operational with sufficient propellant for further maneuver. It is now receiving broadcasting navigational signals from its new orbit.
GIOVE-A was manufactured by SSTL on the basis of a 30 month contract. SSTL will continue to operate the satellite from its Guildford, UK facilities and has also undertaken the testing programmes required to develop future Galileo satellite navigation system and operational satellite developments. The system is said to be fully operational by 2013 and the finalized contract could be expected in late 2009.
