Two British built imaging satellites is reported to have taken off from Kazakhstan to be launched into the orbit. These satellites are to be used to monitor natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, wildfires, etc.
As per BBC, the UK-DMC2 and Deimos-1 spacecraft is to form the Disaster Monitoring Constellation joining the existing four platforms already in the sky. This network is expected to obtain rapid pictures of areas struck by natural disasters. This imagery details will then be used by government agencies to co-ordinate the relief.
Philip Davies from manufacturers Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) stated that the relief workers require up-to-date map information following any major crisis. The satellite imagery aids a person in obtaining the map data.
The new satellites are reported to carry higher resolution optics and possess faster data and imagery transmission speeds.
