The most salient feature of this Sony GPS System is 4.3″ widescreen, touchscreen with anti-glare, fingerprint resistant coating with the unique gesture command option allowing one to trace a simple figure on screen to be taken to most frequent destinations, supported by Navteq maps of the U.K. and Ireland and partial map coverage of France and Belgium. All these supported by a SiRF III GPS receiver that enables one to establish signals even inside buildings, powered by a 512 Mb resident flash memory with Memory Stick Duo Support.

One can also navigate to a particular point of interest like a restaurant or a parking place by searching for POI. Another significant feature of the Sony NV- U53 widescreen GPS system is the ‘Dynamic Re-Routing via TMC (Traffic Message Channel). With this facility, the NV U53 acts like a driving companion telling how to avoid the traffic build-ups before reaching them. It literally does the thinking, analysing each traffic message received and advising the best route, time and again. New Route Guidance part is quite remarkable with the NV U53. Mapping display modes can be selected from the 2D or 3D options.
Vivid Voice Backup
Thinking of a handheld sat nav device, one cannot see through the voice instruction part. It has been considered a major disadvantage when compared with the integrated models. But here the Sony NV-U53 has a decent built-in speaker which enables loud and crisp voice instructions. The volume can be adjusted from the main screen. Though not supporting the automatic volume adjustment depending on the speed of the vehicle like a few other models do, the overall performance here is laudable.
